Map of Ventspils

Ventspils [German: Windau) is a small, industrial town whose port, expanded during the times of the Soviet Union, is mainly used for oil exports. Due to the immigration of workers at the time, the proportion of the population of people from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus is high at around a third by Latvian standards.

background

Due to the past as a city of the Teutonic Order and later as a Hanseatic city, there are some historical relics to see, otherwise the city is of little tourist interest. The place name results from the river flowing into the Baltic Sea here Venta.
