Kandern is a small town in Markgräflerland and lies in the middle valley of the Kander.

background

The Kandertal was already settled in the time of the Celts and the Romans, they used the ore deposits for iron extraction and made ceramics from the mighty clay deposits. Kandern was first mentioned in a document in 776. In 1503 Kandern came into the possession of the Margraves of Baden. Kandern received city rights in 1810.

In 1895 the Kandertal Railway went into operation, it ran from Kandern on a 13 km route to Haltingen to the Rhine Valley Railway. The line has been closed since 1983, but the museum railways run on weekends during the summer months Kandertal Railway and awaken that Chanderli to live.

As part of a community reform in 1974, the formerly independent villages of Feuerbach, Holzen, Riedlingen, Sitzenkirch, Tannenkirch and Wollbach were incorporated.

getting there

By train

The next train station is in Haltingen, the next ICE stop is in Basel Badischer Bahnhof.

The Kandertal Railway from Haltingen to Kandern is only operated as a museum railway on individual days - a nice nostalgic experience, but unsuitable as a means of transport to and from the city.

Kandern is off the main roads, but is well connected to the national road network. On the L 134 one arrives after approx. 8 km after Schliengen to B3, also for A98 at Binzen it is only approx. 11 km
