In the mountains surrounding Katelios lies the village of Markopulo, famous for the mystery of the Madonna dei Serpenti. Every year, exclusively between 14 and 16 August, harmless snakes (of the Telescopus fallax species) come out of their burrows and, according to the testimonies of inhabitants and tourists, reach the sanctuary of the Madonna di Markopulo.
