In the vicinity of Khajuraho is a complex of Hindu and Jain temples from the early 11th century. They date back to the time of the Chandela reign. After their sunset the complex was abandoned and they soon became prey to the jungle. They were discovered again in 1838 thanks to Captain T.S. Burt, an engineer who served in Her Majesty's Army. Of the 85 temples that made up the complex, just over twenty have survived.
