Klaksvík is a city of the Islands Faroe Islands.

To know

It is the second most populated city in the Faroe Islands and an important industrial center. It is located on the island of Boraya and serves as a transport hub for the northeastern part of the archipelago.

Geographical notes

The city is located on the island of Borðoy, in the region of Norðoyar, consisting of the northernmost islands of the archipelago.

When to go

Klaksvík has a temperate, oceanic climate with relatively small temperature excursions between summer and winter.

Background

The first settlements in the area date back toViking era, when there were four farms around the area where the center of Klaksvík stands today. Of one of these farms, located on the east side of Borðoyarvík, there are the ruins, which were buried by two avalanches within twenty years: the first on March 12, 1745, the other on the same date twenty years later. Not far from these ruins there is also the so-called Íslendingatoftir, a site also dating back to the Viking era.

What see

There Christianskirkjan by Klaksvík.

Klaksvík is not the most interesting place in terms of attractions, but, most likely, you will have enough time waiting for a bus, ferry or helicopter to see the city center.

  • 1 Christian Church (Christianskirkjan), Kirkjubrekka (Downtown). The church was built according to the design of the Danish architect Peter Koch and consecrated in 1963. The name derives from the Danish king Christian X, when the church was consecrated to the dead. This is one of the first buildings related to modern Faroese architecture, trying to combine national traditions and trends from the modern world. The traditional Faroese wooden church was taken as a model, but the building was not constructed of wood, but of basalt, much larger in size, and has no bell tower.

What to do

  • 1 Ascent of Mount Klakkur (Klakkur). Simple walking tour takes about three hours round trip from downtown Klaksvik giving the opportunity to see the city from above and see the neighboring islands Kunoy, Kals and Eysturoy. The height of the mountain is 413m, but it rises above sea level, so, especially at the end, minimal physical preparation is required. No special shoes are needed. There is a strong wind above, and it may suddenly rain, so best to have appropriate clothes. To get to Klakkur, you must first go from the center to the heliport, and immediately first turn right (upwards) along the paved road. The road climbs 10 meters and turns right, slowly climbing the mountainside. Along its entire length, beautiful views of Clarkswijk and the fjord. It ends with the parking lot, from which there is already only one path going up. If you don't have the right shoes, or if you're not in the best of physical shape, you can walk a couple of meters to a small reservoir and look out over the islands of Kalsa and Estudoy to the west. Hopefully, walk up the path to the top, where there are some weather instruments. It makes sense to walk 30 meters to the precipice, from there a good view of Kun. After, come back the same way you came.

Shopping

Klaksvík has a supermarket.
