The river Kahl, which gives the Kahlgrund its name, has its source at the Bamberg mill. The first places the river meets are Großkahl on the right side and Kleinkahl on the left side, then Groß- and Kleinlaudenbach. Edelbach lies in a side valley.
The place is predominantly rural, tourism concentrates on the Bamberg mill as a starting point for hikes.
