The Kahlgrund is located in the far northwest of Bavaria and includes the valley of the river Kahl from its source at Kleinkahl to the confluence with the Main at Kahl am Main. It is largely congruent with the Alzenau district, which existed until the 1970s.
The Kahlgrund includes some wine-growing areas, they are the northernmost of the Franconian wine-growing area. Otherwise, the Kahlgrund is mostly in the Spessart with its extensive forest areas.
Economically, the focus is less on Bavaria and more on neighboring Hesse, which is also more convenient in terms of transport, as the high mountains of the Spessart lie between the Kahlgrund and the rest of Lower Franconia.

In the street
The main lifeline of the Kahlgrund is the state road 2305, which runs through the entire area. Accordingly, the road is very busy, especially during rush hour, and there is a risk of congestion. The area is just on the edge of the motorway

By train
The Kahlgrund is also accessed by the Kahlgrundbahn: trains run every hour from Hanau Hbf through the Kahlgrund to Schöllkrippen.

Apart from the railway, the Kahlgrund is developed by buses that connect to the railway line and some of them go as far as Hesse.
Tourist Attractions
- Cockscomb: The highest mountain on the Kahlgrund can be seen from afar. There is a lookout tower and an inn on top of it.

In the Kahlgrund, the apple wine, otherwise known from Hessen, is very widespread, there are also some local wineries that produce original Kahlgrund apple wine. There is also Franconian wine from local Ambau here.
