National (Craiova) - city in Romaniaon Wallachia, the historic capital of the region Oltenia. It is headquarters Dolj district. It has about 300 thousand. residents.
Characteristic
The city is located in the southern part of the country, on the Jiu River. In addition to it, the Aluta River flows nearby, and 70 km to the south Danube. It lies nearly 230 km to the east Bucharest, the capital of Romania, with which Craiova competed for some time for the title of the region's main political center.
History
The city was founded by the Daks, then it became a Roman military camp. From the 15th century it was a well-known trade center and the seat of the governors of Oltenia in the Wallachian Farm. After a period of economic weakness in the 18th century, from the beginning of the 19th century, Krajowa regained its position as one of the leading Wallachian towns. It was a center of crafts and trade. In 1859, together with Wallachia, it became part of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, which in 1866 took the name of Romania. In 1896, the power plant started operating.
On September 20, 1939, in Krajowa, Polish Marshal Edward Rydz-Śmigły issued his last order to the soldiers of the Polish Army. In 1939, the interned President of Poland, Ignacy Mościcki, stayed in Krajów. He lived in the Constantin Mihail Palace, which is commemorated by a plaque on the wall of the building.
On September 7, 1940, an agreement was signed in Krajowa between Romania and Bulgaria on the transfer of Dobrogea to Bulgaria.
