Kralendijk is a city in Bonaire.

background

The translation of Kralendijk is coral dike. Originally, Rincon was the island capital. Only the fort stood in Kralendijk. The formerly independent districts are arranged in a semicircle around this sandy landing site Antriol and Sabana in the North, Nikiboko and Tera Kora in the East. Together they form the city of Kralendijk today. Antriol is located on the Kaminda Lagun road, about 3 km from the town center. In the further course of this road you come to the lagoon on the other side of the island via Lagoen Hill.

When cruise ships are in port, the small town is totally overcrowded. The two most important streets are Kaya Grandi and Kaya J. N. E. Craane, which runs parallel to the sea and merges into Kaya C. E. B. Hellmund in the south. This waterfront street is also known as the waterfront. The historic downtown buildings along Kaya Grandi date from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Some buildings have been renovated and restored. The shop is traditionally located in the basement and the family is housed on the upper floor. At the entrance to Kaya Grandi is the Tourism Corporation Bonaire with information material. At the fish market, the pavilion of which was built in 1935, you can buy fish as well as fruit and vegetables.

The airport is 2 km south of the center of Kralendijk. 600,000 passengers are handled here every year. There is a single ATM in the middle of the main hall right next to the airport's only restaurant. The parking spaces are limited and are located outdoors, directly in front of the airport building. There are no long-term parking facilities. International flights go via Curaçao and to Aruba.

Tourist Attractions

Protestant church
  • Evangelical Church, Kaya Grandi, opposite the north pier. The church was built in 1847 for the Dutch living on the island. The tower was added in 1868.
  • Catholic Church of St. Bernardus, east across the street from the small Julianaplein square. This congregation has existed since 1827. A church building was built two years later. The current church dates from 1948. Next to the church is the priest's house.
  • Wilhelmina place, around the Protestant Church. At the edge of the square is the Van Walbeeck Monument, across from the north pier. Van Walbeeck was the first director of the Dutch West India Company, in 1634 he took possession of Curaçao for the Netherlands. Another monument commemorates the wife of the American President, Eleanor Roosevelt visited the American troops here in 1944.
  • Julianaplein. A small park in the city center. It was prepared in honor of Queen Julianan of the Netherlands. Across the street in the north, the Plasa Fraternan di Tilburg connects. There is a monument to the Trappist monks of Tilburg. They were instrumental in the island's educational system from 1894 to 1991.
Catholic Church
  • Museo Boneriano. Kaya J.C. van de Ree, former manor house from 1885 where Julio van de Ree used to live. He is a co-founder of Washington National Park. The house has been used as a museum since 1986. In addition to objects from Van Ree's private collection, there is a shell collection, ships in bottles, pre-Columbian pottery shards, documents from the island's history, a picture gallery and an important collection of drawings with the Dutch house types in the Netherlands Antilles.Open: Mon - Fri 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.Price: Entry US $ 2.50.
  • Fort Orange. To the south of the Government Office, built around 1640, it had only 4 cannons. The government used it regularly as a storage place and as a prison. The island commander lived in the fort until 1837. In 1868 a wooden lighthouse was built, which was replaced by a massive one in 1932. The fire brigade and police were temporarily housed here in recent years. The building was renovated in 1999 and is now used as a court.
  • Government building, across the street, south of Wilhelmina-Platz. The Government Office Building was built in 1837. In 1972 it was renovated. It is still used by the government and is the governor's office.
In the catholic church
  • Pasangrahan house. On the north side of Wilhelmina-Platz, built around 1890 for the Debrot family. From 1921 it was used as a guest house for the island government. The drinking water authority was later housed there. It was renovated and reopened as the parliament building in 1980.
  • Post office, on the corner of Kaya Grandi and Kaya Simon Bolivar. There has been a post office on the island since 1890, and the post office moved here in 1974.
  • Telegraph Office, Kaya Simon Bolivar. The first telegraph connection between Bonaire and Curaçao came about in 1911. A line to Rincon was built by 1921. In 1944 there were telephone lines everywhere in Kralendijk. In 1961 the system was automated.
  • World War II Monument, Kaya C. E. B. Hellmund, just in front of the north pier. It is said that most of the dead were on board the oil tankers that were sunk by German submarines.
  • Customs building, a few meters south of the north pier. It was built in 1925 as the "Island Office". Over the years it was also used as a tax and post office. In 1995 it was renovated and since then the customs office has been located there.
