Saga Prefecture - Small and rustic, famous for its pottery and the ruins of prehistoric villages.
Nagasaki Prefecture - Note forcity of the same name. A hilly city with its own slice of history to tell. It was the major international port during the closing period of Japan, and the target of the second atomic bomb, dropped by the USA During the Second World War.
Kumamoto Prefecture - Center of Kyushu island, site of Mount Aso and the beautiful Amakusa chain of islands.
Miyazaki Prefecture - Japanese surfers' destination with great beaches and big waves.
Kagoshima Prefecture - Dominated by the Sakurajima volcano, hot enough for sugar cane to grow. Roast yourself on the warm beaches or visit the two famous islands of Yakushima is Tanegashima.
