background

A market town stood on the site of today's town until 1804. The re-establishment was carried out by the then First Consul Napoleon I., who is the prefecture of the department of Fontenay-le-Comte to the newly founded city Napoleon misplaced. The new city was built on a regular floor plan called a pentagon, which was not a regular pentagon, but was composed of a rectangle and an adjoining isosceles triangle. Hardly any older buildings have survived on this floor plan. Most of the buildings are classical (St-Louis church, theater) and are more reminiscent of Russian architecture from that period. With the political situation, the city changed its name repeatedly: Bourbon Vendée, Napoléon-Vendée, since 1870 La Roche-sur-Yon.
