the MV Liemba in 2020 in Kigoma
- There are two Tanzanian ferries connecting Kigoma, in Tanzania, To Mpulungu, in Zambia, with stops at Lagossa (to get to the north of Mahale Mountains National Park), Kalya (to get to the south of the park), Kipili and Kasanga, the last Tanzanian locality and one of the few to be so reachable by bus. Please note that, except at the two terminuses, embarkation / disembarkation is done by means of motorized canoes. The "theoretical" departure from Kigoma takes place every other Wednesday at 16 h and the total journey lasts forty hours. The price of a cabin of 1D class up to Mpulungu costs 105 $ (only payable in dollars and in cash and keep your ticket well because it is required on disembarkation). The two ferries are no longer young (1927 for the legendary MV Liemba and 1982 for the MV Mwongozo) but Tanzanians have a reputation for maintaining their equipment well.
