Touristic site

the lake como is a glacial lake in the north ofItaly, in the region of Lombardy and the most important riparian locality is Como.

Understand

The lake is shaped like an inverted "Y", with two branches extending from Como to the southwest and Lecco to the south-east, which meet halfway up, and the lake continues to Colico in the north. The first kilometers of the parts at the southern ends of the lake are relatively flat, but Lake Como becomes more mountainous towards the north in the Alps. Some of the nearby peaks go slightly above the vegetation line, with some really impressive views. In winter you can ski in the nearby valleys.

Lake Como is quite characteristic. It has been appreciated for its beauty and uniqueness for centuries, and even as early as Roman times.

Tourist information

The provinces of Como and Lecco have created a common tourist site for the lake region and tourist information offices are located at Como and to Lecco :

To go

The main access to the lake is by Milan Where Bergamo. It is also possible to cross the border from Lugano (Switzerland) and arriving at the lake at Menaggio. To the north, the lake can be accessed by the Splügen pass (closed from late autumn to early spring) or from St. Moritz, both from Switzerland.

By train

Regular trains go from Milan to Como (note, there are 2 stations: Como San Giovanni and Como Lago). Como San Giovanni station is a bit far from the city center, but there are a number of buses that stop there. You can buy tickets at the tobacco shop at the station for a few euros or walk to the city center.

Overnight sleeper trains depart from Amsterdam via Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt and Basel and stop at Como San Giovanni in the direction of Milan. Similar day trains also run.

Trains also run from Milan and Bergamo to Lecco, some of them also continue to the eastern coast to Varenna and Colico, then to Sondrio and Tirano.

Circulate

By bus

Buses run from the west bank of Como to Menaggio. Some then continue towards Colico.

On a boat

Several boats travel daily along Lake Como to Colico, stopping in most towns on the way. There are fast services that travel faster, stop in fewer places, and cost more. Less frequent boats / hydrofoils descend the “Eastern Coast” between Bellagio and Lecco.

There are other frequent services between the “triangle” of towns in the center of the lake - Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna. In season there is a boat service to the center of the lake (Bellano, Lenno, Villa Carlotta and Tremezzo in addition to Menaggio, Varenna and Bellagio). It operates every hour of h at 18 o'clock.

Timetables are available at tourist information offices, on the quays or online from Gestione Navigazione Laghi.

If you want to experience Lake Como on your own, you can hire a 40hp motorboat to drive without a boat license. If you are staying in Menaggio, Bellagio, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia or Varenna you can contact ([www.acboatrentals.com AC Boat]). Good prices and service and very nice boats.

By train

On Lake Como, trains only run on the eastern shore of the lake, with stations between Lecco and Colico. Regional trains stop at all stations; while direct trains only in a few of them; the stations on Lake Como are: Lecco (also direct trains), Abbadia Lariana (some direct trains), Mandello, Lierna, Fiumelatte, Varenna (the name of the station is Varenna Esino in Perledo - also direct trains), Bellano (also direct trains), Dervio, Dorio, Piona, Colico (also direct trains). From south to north, the railway line connects Milan to Morbegno, Sondrio and Tirano (in Valtelline); at Colico another line leads to Chiavenna en Valchiavenna.

Direct trains leave from Milan Central Station while regional trains from Milan Porta Garibaldi. In general, there is a direct and regional train every two hours, which means that there is basically a train every hour. The service is more intense in the morning and in the evening (for the shuttles moving in the morning to Lecco and Milan and in the evening from Lecco and Milan). It starts at about h from Milan and ends with the last train from Milan at 9:20 p.m.

By car

The roads go up and down along most of the coasts. On the West Coast, roadworks are common and travel times can vary widely. You can expect an average of 40- 60 km / h. Despite the construction of new tunnels, the road on the west bank still passes through the center of many villages. Avoid the road if you are not an avid driver and dislike small roads, hairpins, steep inclines, tight turns, and heavy traffic. (Fatal) accidents, often involving motorcyclists, are common.

The east coast is served by the SS36 road, a two-lane fast road that connects Milan and Lecco to Colico and the neighboring region of Valtelline. Note that there is no exit other than Lecco, Bellano and Colico. The other villages are served by the old coastal road, which offers beautiful views of the lake, but it is also a bit difficult, due to its small lanes, tight bends and dark tunnels.

Parking in some areas can be problematic, especially if you have a large car. A small car can be much more convenient for traveling and parking.

On a motorcycle

Mandello Lario, on the east bank just above Lecco, is the headquarters of Moto Guzzi, one of Italy's most popular motorcycle manufacturers. They also offer a museum in Mandello. The whole lake area is popular with motorcyclists from all over Europe.

By bike

On Lake Como you can cycle with bicycle rental available for easy routes and rental services without a guide. Bicycles can be rented with special accessories and with free delivery to hotels and B & Bs.
