Geographical notes
Menaggio is a municipality located in the province of Como, in Lombardy. The municipality belongs to the Valli del Lario and Ceresio Mountain Community, located on the western shore of Lake Como, at the entrance of the homonymous valley.
Background
From Menaggio, in Roman times, the via Regina, Roman road that connected the river port of Cremona (the modern Cremona) with Clavenna (Chiavenna) passing from Mediolanum (Milan).
Menaggio in the autumn of 1944 was the seat of the "Anti-rebel Center" of the 6to company of 11to Black Brigade commanded by Emilio Castelli, federal deputy of Como. The anti-rebel center was responsible for numerous tortures and the death of 19 partisans, including the murder of Enrico Caronti known as Romolo, on 23 December 1944.
