Orio al Serio (Öre al Sère in Bergamo dialect) is a city in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy.
To know
The fourth is located in the municipality airport largest and busiest in Italy by passenger volume (behind Fiumicino, Malpensa is Linate).
Background
In ancient times it was inhabited by small tribes of the Ligurian people, followed by the Etruscans first and then by the Cenomanian Gauls, but it was the Romans who urbanized the area. The toponym Orio dates back to the year 829 during the domination of the Franks.
In medieval times the village was equipped with buildings aimed at the defense of the territory, as evidenced by the tower that still shows itself in the historic center. Starting from the 15th century, the town was placed under the domination of the Republic of Venice.
Starting in 1938, during the Second World War, the airport was transformed into a military stopover by the Luftwaffe. In 1970 it was converted to a civil airport.
