Varenna is a municipality of the Lombardy, located on the eastern bank of the Lake Como.

Geographical notes
Municipality overlooking the lake, Varenna is located between the municipalities of Lierna and Bellano on the eastern shore of the Lake Como, with the Val d'Esino behind it.
When to go
Varenna is mainly a spring-summer tourist resort. Most of the shops are open from March to November. The summer period enjoys a good program of cultural activities that include outdoor concerts, conferences and markets.
Background
The first settlement dates back to the time of the Celto-Ligurians, which was subsequently fortified by the Romans. Historical sources report the name of the Roman legionary Vescinus as the builder of the "castrum" of Vezio, in the period in which Rome, with the aim of conquering Europe, decided to increase control of the areas located on the eastern shore of Lake Como.
Subsequently, the Lombards erected the Vezio tower in around 600 which still today dominates the town from above and is a strategic control point for both the northern and southern parts of Lake Como. Undocumented legends tell that Queen Theodolinda spent the last years of her life there.
During the war against Como and Barbarossa, Varenna decided to side with Milan. In 1126 it was defeated and sacked by the people of Como. In 1169, when the Comacina Island, located near the western shores of Lake Como, was destroyed by the imperials, Varenna became the destination of its fleeing inhabitants. Followed by a significant increase in population, and an expansion towards the north of the country, with the construction of the church of San Giorgio, the current patron saint of the city. In order not to forget their origins, the escaped fugitives gave Varenna the name of Insula nova.
