Esino Lario is a municipality of the Lombardy, entirely immersed in the Northern Grigna Regional Park and located about 900 meters above the Lake Como, bordering the mountains with the ancient village of Lierna.

Esino Lario has a tourist tradition that dates back to the nineteenth century, when it began to be frequented by the first scholars fascinated by the geological phenomenon of the karst of the Grigna and by the search for fossils and the almost 500 caves of Moncodeno. With this first tourism, hotels, restaurants and a series of elegant villas were built; in particular in the sixties and seventies the country becomes a well-known holiday destination from Milan and from Brianza. Currently Esino Lario is a summer resort and a renowned starting point for excursions and ascents to the Grigna and the Northern Grigna Regional Park.

The peculiarity of Esino Lario is its position in a sunny basin at about 910 meters above sea level, which gives the town a pleasant microclimate and "fresh air" - as the old tourist flyers used to repeat, advertising the resort for families with children. . The landscape is diversified, with stone houses, old stairways, streets of the residential areas of Esino Superiore and Esino Inferiore, the gentle woods (with excursions starting from Ortanella), the spectacular views of the Lake Como from the church of San Pietro in Ortanella and from the Sasso di Narele, and the view over the impotent peaks of the Grigna da Cainallo.

For the variety of its landscapes, for its position in the middle of the Grigne and for its sunny and pleasant position, Esino Lario is "The pearl of the Grigne".

Geographical notes

A mountain municipality, Esino Lario is located at the end of the Val d'Esino (which starts from Varenna), between the Valsassina and the Lake Como. Its inhabited center is nestled in a morainic basin and its territory is on the northern slopes of the Grigna.

Background

Located inNorthern Italy, Esino Lario is a mountain village of which there are documents that prove its existence as early as the fifth century BC. Its territory shows visible traces of the Alpine orogeny: fossils, almost 500 caves, sinkholes and erratic boulders. The town rises along the ancient route of the Via del Viandante, which connected the towns on the eastern bank of the Lake Como; before the eighteenth century, with the construction of the road that runs along the lake and which allows you to cross the territory from south to north, the road that leads from Lierna it climbs towards Ortanella and then reaches Esino Lario. The country was also connected to the Valsassina, a large valley characterized by the great production of iron.

Esino Lario and the northern massif of Grigna

Esino Lario is a mountain town of 18 km² crossed by roads (provincial road and municipal roads), mule tracks and paths; the toponymy - the names used to identify places and areas - is extremely rich and widespread, as it historically responds to the need to identify properties and borders, even of woods. In addition to the linear distance, it is essential to consider the difference in height to orient yourself in the municipality.

The center of the town is made up of the two historical nuclei of Esino inferior (in dialect "Psciach") and Esino superior (in dialect "Crès"), located about 200 meters in altitude; this is the main residential area, intensively built starting from the 1960s to respond to the development of the tourist economy. The town - as the residential center is called - is located in an open basin, which guarantees good exposure to the sun throughout the year and which at the same time isolates it; from the town no other municipalities can be seen nor their bells heard. The parish church of San Vittore is located between lower Esino and upper Esino, on a small promontory called "il Castello" which can be reached via the Via Crucis.

How to get

By plane

The closest airports to Esino Lario are Milan Malpensa, Bergamo Orio al Serio and Milan Linate airports. From these airports you can reach them by bus or train Milan or Lecco, and from there continue to Esino Lario via Varenna.

By car

  • From Milan: 80 km. Take the SS 36 dello Spluga (superstrada) direction Sondrio.
    • Passing through Varenna. After Lecco, take the Abbadia Lariana exit (Lake SP 72), continue passing Mandello, Olcio, Lierna and Fiumelatte. Once in Varenna, enter the town and follow the signs for Esino Lario.
    • Bellano exit, passing through Parlasco (panoramic road).
    • Valsassina exit, passing through Cortenova and Parlasco.
  • From Lecco: 35 km. Take the SS 36 dello Spluga (freeway) towards Sondrio. The first exit, Abbadia Lariana (Lake - SP 72), continue passing Mandello, Olcio, Lierna and Fiumelatte. Once in Varenna, enter the town and follow the signs for Esino Lario.
  • From Colico on Lake Como: 35 km. Take the SP 72 which runs along the lake towards Lecco. Once in Varenna, enter the town and follow the signs for Esino Lario.
  • From Varenna on Lake Como (12 km - 20 minutes) follow the signs for Esino Lario.
  • From Barzio in Valsassina (30 km - 40 minutes): Take the SP 62; in Cortenova turn onto the SP 65 towards Parlasco and follow the signs for Esino Lario.

From Varenna it is possible to sail by boat ul Lake Como to reach different destinations: Abbadia Lariana, Argegno, Bellagio, Bellano, Careno, Cernobbio, Colico, Como, Gravedona, Comacina Island, Lecco, Mandello, Menaggio, Piona, Pognana, Torno and Tremezzo. The ferries between Varenna, Menaggio, Bellagio and Cadenabbia also allow the transport of cars and buses.

On the train

Esino Lario is not connected to the railway line. The nearest train stop is the station of Varenna (Varenna Esino station) along the Milano Centrale - Tirano line managed by Trenord. From Varenna by public transport continue to Esino Lario by bus (the timetable indicates 40 minutes) managed by Lecco Transport.

By bus

Esino Lario is connected by the bus of the line Bellano-Varenna-Perledo-Esino Lario. The buses are managed by the company Lecco Trasporti with race times published online. Bellano and Varenna can be reached by train with the line Milan-Lecco-Morbegno-Sondrio-Tirano. During the summer season, the Municipality of Esino Lario increased bus services during the evening hours in 2012 and 2013 in order to guarantee the connection of public transport with Perledo and Varenna. There are no public transport connections to Valsassina.

Esino Lario offers different types of accommodation. The location of the accommodations significantly changes the type of stay. The accommodations located in the center of Esino Lario allow quick access on foot to restaurants, shops and services. The accommodations outside the center offer a quieter stay or a panoramic view of the basin. The accommodations located in Ortanella and Cainallo are surrounded by nature and are an ideal point for walks in the woods and excursions in the mountains. Refuges and baitelli are within walking distance and are an ideal stop for trekking and ascents in the Northern Grigna.

A hotel in the middle of meadows and woods, connected to the provincial road by a small road that can be traveled by car, on foot or with a stroller. Open in July and August. You can have lunch indoors and outdoors. The restaurant is surrounded by greenery with a small playground with slide and swings a bowling green where children and adults can run around with plenty of space available. The place is very suitable as a final or intermediate stop on a walk. It can be reached on foot and with strollers from Esino through a mule track and a road; a wide path connects it to Cainallo.

Authorized camping areas

  • Authorized camping area, Locality Ortanella, in the direction of Prato di San Pietro. The area is marked with special signs. 

Please note that camping outside the designated areas is prohibited. Authorizations can be requested from the municipality.

Safety

Esino Lario is a quiet municipality with a very low crime rate. However, being the starting point for mountain walks, trekking and mountaineering, it is good to know the safety rules in the mountains and the principles of environmental education. In particular, it is mandatory to light fires exclusively in the designated areas and, when leaving, carefully extinguish any fire and obviously leave it clean. The agro-forestry-pastoral roads can be traveled by car only with the appropriate authorization. A guide is required to visit the Moncodeno Ice House; the visit is done with helmets, harnesses and headlamps.
The closest hospitals to Esino Lario are the hospital of Lecco, the hospital of Gravedona e l'ospedale di Morbegno; a Esino è presente una pista di atterraggio per elicotteri che viene utilizzata dal pronto soccorso; le ambulanze più vicine partono da Bellano e il Soccorso Val d'Esino offre un servizio di assistenza e trasporto per visite mediche.

La posizione di Esino Lario crea alcuni limiti per l'accesso alle reti telefoniche. Tutti gli operatori di telefonia fissa sono ovviamente disponibili. Gli operatori mobili presenti sono Tim, Tre (roaming) e Vodafone. Il 4G funziona meglio con Tim.

Internet

Internet è disponibile a Esino Lario attraverso la rete fissa (doppino telefonico 56Kb e ADSL Alice), UMTS (tim) e Wireless (Eolo). Villa Clotilde durante gli orari di apertura permette l'accesso a Internet (Eolo) e l'uso di alcuni netbook per connettersi. La banda larga raggiunge Esino (la centralina è collocata in via Montefiori) ed è distribuita con i cavi in rame telefonici; questo fa sì che la qualità della rete sia migliore per gli edifici a meno di 100 metri dalla centralina.
