background
Lamspringe was probably founded in 847 at the source of the river Lamb founded, the first documentary mention comes from the year 872. The place developed around a women's monastery, which was later used by Benedictine monks. The town experienced its heyday from 1643, when English monks moved into the monastery and began building the monastery buildings that have been preserved to this day. After the monastery was dissolved in 1803, most of the facilities fell into disrepair and were not extensively restored until the late 20th century. Since the canonization of Oliver Plunkett, whose relics are kept in Lamspringe, the place has also been important as a Catholic place of pilgrimage.
