Country is a department in the French region New Aquitaine and has the serial number 40. The département borders on the départements in the north Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne, in the east to the département Gers, in the south to the département Pyrénées-Atlantiques and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

The name of the department derives from the large contiguous forest area Country of Gascony which is for the most part within the boundaries of the department. Actually, the French word means country in German pagan. And this was actually in today's area until Napoléon had this area reforested and thus decisively changed the landscape.
