getting there

By train

Thanks to a high-speed route that allows speeds of up to 300 km / h, Bordeaux can be reached from Paris-Montparnasse in just two hours. The high-speed trains are here every hour from morning to evening. From Germany there are train connections with the TGV, ICE or Thalys Paris, there is a change in the direction of the Atlantic coast. In Paris, you have to switch between different train stations with the Métro.

By bus

The long-distance bus provider Flixbus and Ouibus have connections to and from Bordeaux in their program. Several times a day there are e.g. trips to and from Paris, the journey time is around 7-8 hours. Flixbus also offers departures in Arcachon.

With the ferry

A special way of getting to the Gironde department can be to take the car and passenger ferry across the Gironde. Depending on the destination, you can save a few kilometers, especially from the north. There are two ferry connections, on the one hand the ferry from Royan to Le Verdon directly on the Atlantic Ocean, on the other hand the route from Blaye to Lamarque further inland. In the high season the ships sometimes run every hour. Information on departure times and tariffs is available on the relevant website Website of the region.

mobility

By train

TER regional trains run regularly on several routes. The Bordeaux-Saint Jean train station is a hub in the region. Most of the time, the trains on the regional routes run in the morning and in the evening almost every hour, but at greater intervals during the day. Regional trains, on the other hand, run much more often in the immediate vicinity of Bordeaux, here connections are offered almost every hour, but less often on weekends.

Timetables of the railway lines can be found on the regional Website for the TER trains. There you can find, among other things, the timetable for the TER line 32 to Arcachon, the journey time from Bordeaux is one hour, and trains run every hour here, even on weekends. Or with the TER line 26 to Saint-Emilion, here the trains run every 1-2 hours, on weekends around six connections in each direction.

By bus

Beyond the regional rail lines, there is an extensive network of regional bus routes. The most important lines have their starting point in Bordeaux or a tram stop on the outskirts, and lead far out into the surrounding area. Mention should be made of these lines to touristically significant places e.g. on the Atlantic:

  • Line 201 from Bordeaux, tram stop Buttinière (line A) to Blaye, travel time 75 minutes (every hour on weekdays, 4-5 journeys in each direction on weekends)
  • Line 601 from Bordeaux, Quinconces (city center) via Lège to Cap Ferret, travel time around two hours (weekdays around hourly to Lège, less often to Cap Ferret, on weekends 6-8 journeys in each direction to Cap Ferret)
  • Line 702 from Bordeaux, Saint-Jean train station to Lacanau-Océan, travel time around one and a half hours (6 connections on weekdays, 3-4 trips in each direction on weekends)

Beyond the more important routes, the bus routes are much less frequent. Information on timetables, route network and tariffs can be found on the Website of the regional provider TransGironde.

There is a small city bus network in the area of the city of Arcachon and neighboring municipalities such as La-Teste-de-Buch. Line 1, for example, leads from Arcachon train station to the Dune du Pilat. The journey time is around 30 minutes, the buses run every hour, but less often on Sundays. Information is available on the Website of the transport company.
