Lappeenranta is a city in Eastern Finland and belongs to the scenic region South Karelia. Lappeenranta has excellent connections to Russia, from where the Saimaa Canal to Vyborg, one can travel to on the canal Vyborg Companies. Lappeenranta and the surrounding region have great leisure and recreational value.

Lappeenranta is on the railway line from Helsinki, Lahti to Joensuu. A Pendolino or IC stops six times a day at the train station, which is around 1 km from the city center.

In the street

From Helsinki it is best to follow the motorway towards Porvoo - Kotka. Shortly after Porvoo, the expressway branches off towards Kouvola. At Kouvola this meets the expressway from Lahti, after which you reach Lappeenranta.

By boat

There are shipping connections to Vyborg in Russia through the Saimaa Canal. Day trips are also possible without a visa, but you have to register in advance. Saimaa shipping changes its route networks almost every year. There are usually connections to Savonlinna, but possibly also to Kuopio and Joensuu.

  • Linnoitus. The fortress is the oldest district of Lappeenranta and invites you to stroll. There are historical buildings, a very nice little Russian church, several museums and the pretty little café Vänrikki.
  • Cavalry Museum. Tel.: 358 5-616 2257, 358 5-616 2261 (Ulla Loisa). The Cavalry Museum was founded by the city of Lappeenranta in cooperation with the traditional associations for the dragoon battalion and the cavalry of the Uusimaa province. The museum opened in 1973.   • Wolkoff House Museum. Tel.: 358 5 6162261. Wolkoff House, located in the city center, at Kauppakatu 26, is one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Lappeenranta; it was built between 1826 and 1905. The oldest part was built by a merchant named Claudelin, and from 1872 to 1983 it was the home of four generations in a row of the Russian Wolkoff family. In 1993 the house with the courtyard was opened to the public. The furnishings, rich in details, which have been created "layer by layer" over the course of many decades, give the house a unique atmosphere. The South Karelian Art Museum began its activities in the autumn of 1965 in the buildings of the former gun depot at the northern end of the fortress. The museum was given its own new rooms when the neoclassical barracks buildings with their hipped roof construction opposite the Orthodox Church were repaired for museum purposes in the 1980s. The barracks were built in 1798 during the reign of Tsar Paul I to house troops. The art museum's collections include Finnish art from the mid-19th century to the present day. The largest of the collections of older art is the collection of the art lovers of Viipuri (Wiburg) e.V., Viipurin Taiteenystävät ry, in which i.a. Arvid Liljelund, Hjalmar Munsterhjelm, Pekka Halonen, Tyko Sallinen, Väinö Hämäläinen, Väinö Kamppuri, Ilmari Aalto, Jalmari Ruokokoski are represented. The South Karelian Museum is housed in the field stone magazines in the northern tip of the Linnoitus fortress, which used to be used as a gun depot. The buildings date from the beginning of the 19th century. The collections of the cultural history museum are a summary of the museum collections of the cities of Lappeenranta, Wiburg and Käkisalmi. The museum collects, researches and presents in its exhibitions not only the history of today's South Karelia but also the history of the Karelian isthmus and the area around Wiburg.
