Geographical notes
Laramie is located at a very high altitude (2,200m) and as a result has considerably milder summers and very cold winters than other US cities of comparable latitude in the upper Midwest. Since it is located east of the Continental Divide, placing it in the shade of the rain Rocky Mountains, the climate around Laramie is very dry for most of the year, so travelers here should be careful to drink plenty of water and not overdo it immediately upon arrival to mitigate potential altitude sickness risks.

By plane

Laramie is also accessible fromDenver International Airport (IATA: DEN). From Denver, take Interstate 25 north to Cheyenne, where Interstate 80 intersects.
By car
The main access to Laramie is along Interstate 80, the state's main east-west corridor; it is about an hour west of the intersection with I-25 a Cheyenne. Due to the altitude and northern location, it is important to be aware of road conditions and road closures along all roads, but especially on I-80 as its closure can block you. In the summer months the city is also easily accessible on a smaller road (US 287) starting from Fort Collins, in Colorado. From Denver the ride is shorter than I-25 / I-80, but not noticeably faster.

What to do
- Snowy Range Scenic Byway. Snowy Range Road is a nationally designated scenic route 46km long. Connects Laramie and Saratoga via the Snowy Range Pass. There are fishing, picnicking, and hiking opportunities along the way, including a half-day hike to the 3,661m Medicine Bow Peak. The pass is closed in winter.

Where stay
University events are important attractions compared to the modest population of Laramie; expect limited availability and higher prices towards the start of the academic year in late August and early May when student families descend on the city. Home football matches, held several Saturdays in the fall, can also fill hotels well in advance.
