Geographical notes
Lavino is located about 50 km from Rome and 6 km from Anzio. It overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and is surrounded by the Pontine countryside. It extends over a generally flat area but some parts of the only large beach in Lavinio are located a few tens of meters below the town.
When to go
Lavinio in the summer is populated by tourists, especially Romans, making it a very crowded town. The best time to go there are the months of July and August if you want to be in company, with the town full of people and crowded beaches; for those who want to enjoy baths or solitary walks, the recommended month is June, in which there is the right climate to stay on the beach and Lavinio is not yet full of tourists. The winter months, on the other hand, are suitable for those who love complete tranquility and do not like nightlife, as the town has very few inhabitants who live there all year round.
Background
According to legend, Lavinio was founded by Aeneas, hence the name Lido di Enea, at the end of his long wanderings, when he landed on the coasts of Lazio. In reality the ancient "Lavinium" corresponds to the current Ardea, located a few kilometers to the north, while the present town of Lavinio was founded after the end of the Second World War, during the reclamation of that area.
