Lecce is a city in Apulia and the capital of Province of Lecce.

background

Lecce is 49 m high and 12 km from the sea. 92,195 people live in an area of 238 km². The city probably stands on the site of ancient Lupia. In Norman times it was called Lycia and was the seat of a county, the title of which was led by Tancred (d. 1194), among others.

Lecce is famous for its baroque buildings. Since these do not follow all the characteristics of the typical Italian baroque, such as curved facades, they are referred to as the “Lecceser Baroque”. The style was promoted by the limestone quarried nearby, which can be easily worked when freshly mined and only hardens in the air. A prime example of this is the Basilica Santa Croce.

Cartapesta art has been cultivated since the 17th century. Paper mache figures built around a wire mesh and straw. In the old town there are numerous studios in which these are still made.
