background
Salento is the 40 km wide and 100 km long peninsula that forms the "heel of the Italian boot" in the southeast of Apulia. The north consisted of the territory of the province Brindisi and the southern part of the province Tarant, the southern Salento roughly covers the territory of the province Lecce.
Salento was already settled in prehistoric times, and they probably lived here in antiquity Illyria (Northern Greece region - Balkans) originating from Messapier, who lived with the inhabitants of the Greek colony Tarent was in conflict. Salento was colonized by the Greeks, a fact that still speaks a Greek dialect in the triangle of the former Greek foundations Gallipoli - Otranto - Nard; later the area became a Roman province. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the region became part of the Eastern Roman Empire, and Greek culture was continued under the rule of the Byzantines; until the Normans and then the Stauffer ruled the south of Apulia as part of the Kingdom of Naples. In the 15th century tried the Muslim Saracens to gain a foothold on the peninsula after the conquest of Otranto the Saracens were driven out again and a series of coastal towers secured the entire coastline from Saracen invasions.
The rule now took over the House of Aragon with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, southern Italy with Apulia was considered "Regno di Sicilia ulteriore" or the Kingdom of Naples. The impoverished southern Italian kingdom existed until 1860, when it was conquered by Garibaldi's militants and united with the north to form the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
