Geographical notes

The municipal area, located in the north-western part of the Salento plain.

The long coastline, mainly sandy, preserves coastal dunes, wetlands, rocks and islets. Among these, theBig Island (or Rabbit Island) covered with Aleppo pines and acacias, and the Island of Malva. The particularly rich seabed hosts in the sandy areas the so-called submerged grassland of Posidonia oceanica, which guarantees oxygen, shelter and nourishment to numerous marine organisms, and in the rocky areas the multicolored coralligenous. The marine fauna consists of crustaceans, molluscs, fish and turtles. The extraordinary biological interest of posidonieto has contributed to the establishment ofMarine protected natural area of ​​Porto Cesareo in 1997.

Archaeological sites
