Coastal towers of Salento is an itinerary that develops through the Puglia.
Introduction
The Salento is dotted with watchtowers since it has always been the subject of numerous attacks by various populations of the Mediterranean. We do not know what was the first period in which these towers were built, some could also refer to the Norman age, but there is no certain evidence. For the current aspect, most of the coastal towers still present today are to be referred to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Many of these towers are now in poor condition, while a good part were restored around 2012 for tourism and excursion purposes.
Some of these (for example Torre San Gennaro, Torre San Cataldo, Torre Palascia, Torre Badisco, Torre Santa Maria di Leuca) have been completely destroyed and have been included in the itinerary only for historical reasons.
The complete itinerary is about 400km long and can be covered on foot, by bicycle and by car. Some towers have remained the only architectural element in the midst of nature, others have been incorporated into hamlets or localities that bear their name.
