  • Holy Week: The rites of Holy Week in Taranto are one of the most important events that take place in the city. They have a lot in common with those of Spanish cities, considering the long Spanish rule in southern Italy.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. On this day, after religious acts, relatives, friends and acquaintances give each other an olive branch or a network of palm branches, as a symbol of peace and in memory of Jesus in Jerusalem.
On Palm Sunday the two most important brotherhoods of the municipality of Taranto, the Addolorata (they belong to the Church of San Domenico in the old town) and the Carmine (they belong to the Church of Madonna del Carmine) meet for a “competition”. This “competition” determines who will carry the statues of the procession and who will be “Perdoni” (pairs of friars who step out of the mother church in pairs; literally: those who ask for forgiveness).
On the following days, special services are held in all churches.

kitchen

The town's traditional restaurants offer a light but tasty cuisine: seafood is combined with products from the earth and everything is dressed with the best cold-pressed olive oil from Taranto (Olio Terre Tarentine DOP).

Typical dishes are: Cavatelli with mussels, risotto with seafood, octopus and grilled fish with raw or cooked vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, artichokes and legumes are particularly tasty here. Typical are orecchiette (ear noodles) with cime di rapa (stem cabbage) or tomato sauce as well as mozzarella and fresh provolone or veal roulades and poultry liver from the grill, which are accompanied with wines from this area: Aleatico di Puglia, Lizzano DOC, Martina Franca DOC, Primitivo di Manduria . Oranges, mandarins, clementines (clementine from the Gulf of Taranto IGP), grapes, figs and watermelons are never missing on a decorated festive table and to finish off, honey and almond cakes or typical carteddàte, sannacchiùdere and pettole, which are prepared for special holidays, are served.

You can get very good ice cream in the Gelateria del Ponte (yogurteria, creperia, budineria) in Via d'Aquino 110 or in Via Matteotti 1 (near the swing bridge)
