To Chur The cantonal road climbs steeply from Passugg and reaches via Churwalden and Parpan a high valley in which the two now merged local ropes Lenzerheide and Valbella extend around the Heidesee (Il Lai) at 1493 meters above sea level.

Obervaz with the three fractions of Lain, Muldain and Zorten was mentioned in a document as early as the Carolingian era. During excavations, a medieval hall church from the 7th century was found in the area of the church of St. Donat von Zorten. The barons of Vaz had from the 12th century. a larger area of rulership was built, to which 28 villages were subject to tithing, 25 castles up to Jörgenberg Castle (at WaltensburgThe daughters of the last Baron von Vaz were born in the 14th century. married to the princes of Werdenberg and Toggenburg. After the Werdenberg house was ravaged, the valley was able to buy itself out of the Werdenberg rule.

In the Grisons turmoil, in the wake of the Thirty Years' War, the population was massively decimated by the plague that was brought in; in the 17th century the place experienced an upswing with the reestablishment of the Graubünden rule, churches and patrician houses were built. Until the 19th century. desolate the region, which with its increasing population no longer gave the inhabitants sufficient livelihoods, Vazers went to military service as mercenaries or settled in northern Italy as confectioners or cafetiers. The Moser and Kollegger families moved in in the 19th century and were only able to integrate themselves with great difficulty. Under pressure from the Swiss Confederation, people working as warden masters, tinkerers or peddlers received Obervaz citizenship, which many traveling families still have today. The actor Zarli Carigiet, in his role as a tramp, referred to this past with the saying “i bi vo Vaz and kumma vo Vaz and bi au z Vaz dahaima”.

Tourism was timidly heralded in 1854 with the inn on the market square, and numerous pensions and hotels were built by the end of the century. Winter sports began with a ski course in 1903, in 1936 a toboggan cable car ("Funi") with sledges that travel like a funicular on a snow path was built The connection to the Arosa ski area merges into one of the largest winter sports areas in the Canton of Graubünden.
