Background

Victoria was founded by the British missionary Alfred Saker in June 1858. Saker bought the land from the chief of the Isubu tribe, King William I of Bimbia. Due to this treaty, Victoria and her surroundings were initially not part of the German colony of Cameroon and remained under British administration. In 1982 Victoria was renamed, and has been known as Limbe ever since.
