Limoges, the capital of Haute-Vienne, lies amphitheatrically on a hill, 210 m high, on the right bank of the Vienne.

background

The city with around 136,000 inhabitants owes its relative importance to the fact that it is an important stage on the road from Orleans to Bordeaux formed, in which here, partly determined by the course of the rivers, other traffic lines flowed. But the layout of the railways was not favorable for Limoges.

In Gallic times, Limoges, as the capital of the Lemovices, was called Augustoritum, which is still remembered by the remains of an amphitheater and numerous ancient finds. Later the city took the name of the tribe. In the 5th century the Visigoths, later the Franks, made themselves lords of Limoges, which now almost always belonged to Neustria. During the Carolingian division of the country, the city came to France; Ludwig d'Outremer gave them to Duke Wilhelm of Aquitaine. Later it was long a bone of contention between England and France, but was forever united with the Crown of France in 1369. Before the revolution, the city, from which 4 popes and 60 saints emerged, had over 40 monasteries. The old Viscounts of Limoges, one of which Gerald occurs as early as the 10th century, died out in 1226. The marshals Jourdan and Bugeaud, the Girondist Vergniaud and the economists L. Faucher and M. Chevalier were born in Limoges.

By train

Limoges is located on one of the most important long-distance railways in France: the von Paris to Toulouse, pretty much exactly in the middle. Fully electrified before 1940, this line was the parade route for long-distance trains such as the "Capitole". Sooner or later, no new TGV routes are planned on this route, so that you can still reach Limoges with locomotive-hauled long-distance trains. The French are not familiar with long-distance timetables, but you can expect a train to the south and then to Limoges at least once an hour at Austerlitz station in Paris. The travel times are also different; the faster trains take around 2 hours 50 minutes, while the slower trains take half an hour.
