Piazza Libertà and Palazzo Terragni
  • Palio Lissone. Traditional-popular event. It consists of the historical reenactment of the race of the Lixiones, the water carriers who had the task of supplying the army of the Roman Empire. The term palio, deriving from the Latin pallium (rectangular cloth worn as an overcoat over the Roman tunic), originally indicated only the piece of precious cloth that was placed at the point of arrival and which was assigned to the winner of the contest. Later the meaning was extended to the festival in general, meaning by palio the set of rites and customs strictly connected to the actual race. The palio is based on twelve districts, which the municipal territory is divided into. The Palio Lissone, as originally conceived, consisted of two races. One, still practiced, among the water carriers and founders of the city in Roman times (Lixiones) and the other, now abandoned, among the carpenters (Legnàmee) of the city. The competitions, anticipated for a month by various skills and cultural tests among the representatives of the twelve districts, are preceded by a historical procession in which the representatives of the districts parade in Roman period costumes and historical clothes, in memory of the foundation of the city. Each district parades with its own historical banner, followed by the extras and athletes who will compete in sports competitions, which serve to crown the winning district of the Palio. Each team is governed by the figure of the district captain, chosen from among the members of the district, who has the task of representing the fellow citizens during the entire duration of the competitions.
The Palio, in its current version, dates back to 1989. The event takes place every two years (usually in odd years) in June and the twelve districts in which the city is divided participate. At the end of the competitions (sporting, cultural and artistic) the water carrier race takes place. A relay race around the central Piazza Libertà, in which each district participates with two rionists. The peculiarity of this race is constituted by the fact that each runner must run with an orcia full of water on his shoulder, which symbolically represents the work of the founders of the city.
Throughout the month preceding the race of the water bearer, the rionists clash in numerous sporting, cultural and skill tests, each of which is disputed, in rotation, in the individual districts, such as those of: singing, game of cards, bowling, game of the living checkers, historical costume and award ceremony of the Queen of Lissone, painting, photography, football tournament and dance tournament.
