Coast and Slovenian Karst (in Slovenian: Obalno-kraška) is a region of the Slovenia.

Geographical notes

The area is located in the southwestern part of the country. It appears to be bathed by the Adriatic Sea.

Background

Area of ​​very ancient origin, subject to Italian and Yugoslav irredentisms which caused continuous exodus and alterations of the ethnic balance.

Coastline

  • Ankaran (Ankaran) - Among the sites of greater historical importance is the Benedictine monastery of San Nicola, dating back to the beginning of the 12th century. In 1630, the bubonic plague forced the monks to abandon the monastery, which was purchased only in 1774 by the Madonizza family of Koper, who transformed it into a summer residence.
  • Koper (Koper) - First city you meet from Trieste, is a typical seaside town.Among the main places of interest in Koper are the 15th century Palazzo Pretorio, in Venetian Gothic style, the 12th century Carmine Rotunda church and the Cathedral of the Assumption and of San Nazario with its bell tower (55 m) of the fourteenth century.
  • Piran (Piran) - Small port town that still retains the characteristics of the period in which the town was under the Venetian Republic. Narrow streets and small houses give the city its particular charm. The inhabited area is divided into two historic districts: Punta and Marciana (or Marzana) divided by the inlet of the port and the space that belonged to the ancient mandrake; they are surrounded by numerous districts and small hamlets.

Karst

  • Of course (Komen) - In the hamlet of Goriano there is the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery of ten thousand corpses relating to the First World War and located next to the cemetery of the small town (where there is the tomb of the dean of Comeno, Bogomil Němec, Bohemian, slain by fascists in 1931 during an interrogation), along the regional road leading to Brestovizza. It is the largest cemetery of the Austro-Hungarian army in the area of ​​the Isonzo front; in fact, over 10,000 soldiers of different nationalities are buried there.
  • Divaccia (Divača) - The Škocjan Caves are located on the municipal territory, one of the major Slovenian tourist attractions and one of the greatest examples of karst phenomena studied in depth by the world's leading geologists. Another important karst formation in the area is the Dolina Risnik.
  • Erpelle-Cosina (Hrpelje-Kozina) - It borders directly with Italy near Trieste and is one of the most used border crossings by tourists with destination Rijeka, the Kvarner islands, Dalmatia and the eastern part of Istria. The municipality borders to the south-east with Croatia through a limestone plateau called Cicceria.
  • Island (Izola) - Among the most significant buildings of the town it is worth mentioning: the Cathedral of San Mauro (16th century), with paintings of Venetian art (including a deposition by Palma il Giovane and a San Sebastiano by Irene da Spilimbergo) and an organ di Callid from 1796 and the Besenghi palace (second half of the 18th century) today the seat of the local community of Italians.
  • Postojna (Postojna) - City famous for the caves of the same name that can be visited by train.
  • Sesana (Sežana) - Equally important activities, in addition to agriculture still very widespread, are those related to tourism, with the presence in the municipal area of ​​various casinos, the most important of which is located in Lipica (Slovenian Lipica).

How to get

By plane

The only available airport is Portoroz Airport (in Slovenian Aerodrom Portorož) which is located in Piran. It is the third international airport in the country and is located in the immediate vicinity of the border with Croatia, not far from the Sečovlje salt pans.

By car

It is possible to take advantage of the road connections entering from Trieste.

On boat

On the train

It is possible to take advantage of direct connections with Ljubljana, Sezana, Divaca, Postumia, where it is possible to cross connections to Nova Gorica or Villa Opicina.

By car

The road network is in good condition. Be careful in the Portoroz and Piran areas, given the road elevation relative to the water level.

On boat

There are seasonal connections between the major centers of the area, especially in the summer season.

By bus

There are numerous connections to large and medium-sized centers. Attendance is intensified in the summer.

On the train

Used the connection between Koper (Capodistria), Divaca, Postojna towards Ljubljana / Maribor.
