Geographical notes
A little less than half an hour by car from the Italian border is San Daniele del Carso. The ancient part of the town consists of a small village of medieval origin located just below the top of a modest hill (hill Thurn, 364 m asl) in the western Karst from which you can enjoy a broad view. This upper part of the locality still retains the characteristic karst housing with terraced buildings, with a Romanesque and Gothic structure, with narrow lanes that often flow into small open spaces dominated by monumental wells.
Background
This area was already frequented in ancient times (the first settlements date back to the Hallstatt civilization, when the first fortified castle was built on the top of the Thurn hill) assumed great importance in the Roman period due to its proximity to the system of fortifications created to protect the Julian Alps. On the top of the hill there is the icebox Ledanica or Gledanica where there are the remains of a watchtower from which the ancient Romans could easily control the transit towards theItaly.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, and the parenthesis of the Ostrogothic Kingdom, following the Gothic War, its territory became part of the Byzantine domains. After an interlude of Lombard domination from 751, this part of the Karst together with Istria returned to Byzantine hand from 774.
After the Lombards were annihilated, Charlemagne also occupied Byzantine Istria in 788, incorporating it into Regnum Italiae entrusted by Carlo to his son Pipino.
The Frankish dominion ceased with the deposition of Carlo il Grosso, Berengario, who became king ofItaly, the Aquileian marquisate passed to his vassal Vilfredo who was then named marquis of Friuli and Istria in 895 by him.
Starting from 951 the municipality was subdued by several duchies and ruling families, until 1200, when it passed to the counts of Gorizia, under which he was called Antiquorum Goritianum Comitum Residentia (i.e. Ancient residence of the Counts of Gorizia).
In 1500, together with the rest of the County of Gorizia, it passed to the House of Habsburg.
After the First World War it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy and was joined to the province of Gorizia as an autonomous municipality with the same hamlets of the Habsburg period.
Between 1945 and 1947, being west of the Morgan line it was part, together with the whole Karst of Comeno, of Zone A of Venezia Giulia under the British-American control of the Allied Military Government (AMG); it then passed to Yugoslavia and then to Slovenia.
