Ljubljana - Liubliana

Pictures of Ljubljana.

Ljubljana (Ljubljana in Slovenian) is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. It is located in the region of Central Slovenia. As of January 1, 2011, 280 140 inhabitants were registered in the city.

Context

Ljubljana It is the capital of Slovenia since this small country gained independence from Yugoslavia. Before it was already the capital of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, one of the federated republics that formed Yugoslavia before its dissolution; and even before it was the capital of the Illyrian Provinces, a puppet state established by Napoleon. In between, Ljubljana was an Austrian city, although it was mostly Slovenian for a few centuries before.

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenian culture. The first two books in their language were published in it in 1550: an alphabet and a catechism. Today it is the site of the largest cultural movement in all of Slovenia.

There are Roman remains in Ljubljana, from when the city was called Emona for them. Before becoming a Slavic settlement, it was destroyed by the Huns and later by other Germanic peoples.

Districts

The city is made up of the following districts:

  1. Bežigrad
  2. Center
  3. Črnuče
  4. Dravlje
  5. Golovec
  6. Jarše
  7. Moste
  8. Polje
  9. Posavje
  1. Rožnik
  2. Rudnik
  3. Sostro
  4. Šentvid
  5. Šiška
  6. Šmarna gora
  7. Trnovo
  8. Vič

To get

By plane

Although Ljubljana has a small international airport in the city of Brnik, about 26 km from the Slovenian capital, it is usually cheaper to do it through Italy, landing at the airport of Trieste, called Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport, and traveling to Slovenia by bus to the nearest city (Koper) and taking the train there to go to any other point in the country.

By train

We take a train in Venice that will take us to the Italian city of Gorizia, there walking 30 minutes or by means of a small public bus we will cross the city to get to Nova gorica; both cities are separated only by a street. Trains depart from Nova Gorica to Ljubljana, transferring at Jesenice. It is advisable to do the Nova Gorica-Bled Jezero route to visit one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe, from there we can take a direct bus to the capital Ljubljana.

By car

In Slovenia there is a car-sharing service in the style of BlaBlaCar called Prevoice. Its use is very simple, especially from the mobile application, and there you can search for routes to or from all over Slovenia and surrounding countries. It is the cheapest and works quite well.

If you come by car through Slovenia, you have to be careful on the motorways, since to use them you need a bullet point that is bought at gas stations and has to be glued to the windshield. If you are caught without the vignette, it is very possible that you will have to pay a hefty fine, between € 300 and € 800. More info.

By bus

From Spain, Hungary or Romania, you can reach Ljubljana using the international bus company Eurolines.

Take a walk

Ljubljana is a perfect place for a walk. The historic center is very small, and in an hour or two walking we will have seen it in its entirety. Even so, it is advisable to do it to admire the architecture of Ljubljana.

To go up to the castle there is a cable car, but it can also be done on foot. The walk lasts no more than 30 minutes and is very pleasant, despite the climb.

Watch

The Church of the Annunciation on Prešeren Square.

The easiest and most pleasant way to get to all the places described below is on foot, except the Zoo and the Museum of Architecture.

  • Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) Tromostovje consists of three separate picturesque bridges located next to each other. According to the design of the well-known Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, the two side bridges were built in the 1930s; the middle bridge is originally from 1842 and has only been redesigned at that time. The neighboring Prešeren square with the statue of the greatest Slovenian poet France Prešeren is the central location of the center of Ljubljana and a common meeting point. From here, cross Ljubljanica and turn left towards Open Market and Dragon Bridge, or go straight and then right towards Old Town. Edit
  • 2 Old town Nestled between the castle hill and the river Ljubljanica is the old town with two squares, Mestni trg (town square) with the Robba fountain and the town hall behind, and, further on, Gornji trg (upper square). The well-preserved medieval buildings now house local designer shops and several popular cafes and restaurants. Although they may seem spooky, the narrow and perfectly safe streets lead to charming little squares and buildings. Edit
  • 3 Zmajski Most (Dragon Bridge) Completed in 1901, designed by Croatian Jurij Zainovich. It is guarded by four detailed dragon statues from the city's coat of arms. Look for the dragon motif throughout the city. Be careful in the Dragon Bridge area as it is on a busy street just outside the pedestrian zone and near misses (and worse) between distracted tourists and traffic are common. The Dragon Bridge is located at the end of the Ljubljana Open Market, just a block or two downstream (northeast direction) from the Triple Bridge.
  • Ljubljana Castle. (You can take the funicular or go up). Governing the city from the hill in the middle of Ljubljana stands the castle.
The tower has magnificent views of the entire city. You can also see the Sava River and the Kamnik Alps in the distance. Included is a 3D film of the history of Ljubljana from a prehistoric settlement to the Roman Empire and modern times (€ 6.50 for adults, € 3.00 for students, seniors).Entry to the castle courtyard, chapel and gift shop is free, but there is a fee for access to the tower.
  • Republic Square .Where crowds gathered when Slovenia announced its independence from the Yugoslav Federation in 1991. The square has significant importance to Slovenian history, as it was a place of important public gatherings (and demonstrations) in the past. Across the street is the Slovenian Parliament. Its façade is decorated with artistic nude statues of Slovenians at work and at leisure. The square is also home to the International Business Center. Edit
  • Roman ruins A short walk west of the city center are the remains of the Roman city walls, including several pillars for a gateway. Edit
  • Krakovo A part of the city that looks like a village that connects the center with the suburb of Trnovo. Edit
  • Metelkova city .A self-proclaimed autonomous culture place to bring together alternative artists, many subcultures and youth. What used to be a military barracks is now filled with underground artists, bars and clubs. Metelkova can get crowded on Fridays and Saturdays. It is a 5-minute walk from the main train station and is home to the famous Celica Hostel. Edit
  • Tivoli Park (At the western end of the city center.). The main park of the city. You can sit on a park bench and enjoy the sun. Rožnik (the hill overlooking Ljubljana from the west) is a short walk through the forest. This is a popular weekend destination for locals. Edit

To drink

  • Very close to the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje in Slovenian), in the city of Ljubljana, is one of the most particular bars. For those who speak Spanish, the surprise is immediate. His name is Cupiterija Son of a Bitch It is located at Mestni Trg 4. In summer the bar sets up some tables outside and is a nice place to stop for a few drinks.
  • On weekends, one of the best places to go out, with an alternative atmosphere, is Metelkova. It's kind of a neighborhood free, which is governed by its own rules (a bit in the style of Christiania in Copenhagen) and has several bars, nightclubs (some gay), and art exhibitions. Beer is cheap and can be drunk outdoors.
  • In the Congress Square (Kongresni trg) or in the riverbank You can also drink outdoors or make a bottle.

Sleep

Here are some recommendations for spending the night in Ljubljana:

  • Hotel Center: it is 5 blocks from the central train and bus station. The price is not cheap compared to other hotels in the rest of Europe, but it maintains the same costs in general lines as the other hotels in the country. The rooms are very spacious and the bathroom facilities are excellent. If you choose this hotel in summer, the only problem is that it is located on an avenue (Slovenska Cesta) that is quite noisy and if you need to open the window due to the heat (the small fan they offer is not enough to mitigate the humidity and heat ) There is a lot of noise coming in through the window (and you may not be able to sleep). Other information is that they only accept cash payments and do not offer breakfast, but they do have Internet! Website: http://www.hotelcenter.si/
  • Hotel Emonec: If there is something to highlight this hotel is its proximity to the Triple Bridge, being that part of the city the most attractive to walk both day and night. Another very interesting thing is the abundant breakfast that they offer. One detail to consider so you don't have to rush out to buy is that they don't offer shampoo. The rooms are spacious with a small TV where you can watch some of the local programming. It also has Internet! Website: http://www.hotel-emonec.com/
  • Celica Hostel: It is located a bit far from the train station, compared to the previous two, but in the Metelkova neighborhood, where a very interesting Cultural Center operates. It's really worth it well, have you ever stayed in a jail? Celica is that, a reconditioned jail. It also has a bar and a restaurant, Internet and breakfast. Even if you don't stay there, you can't stop taking a walk, since both the hostel and the Metelkova neighborhood offer a unique urban landscape. Website: http://www.hostelcelica.com/

Security

Ljubljana is one of the safest cities in Europe and the world. People are very friendly and always try to help foreigners. Ljubljana is possibly one of the safest capitals you will ever visit. Surprisingly safe during the day and at night, as a tourist you shouldn't have a problem, as long as you're not desperately looking for trouble.
