History

Ljusterö's history is until the 19th century largely divided into Norra Ljusterö, Södra Ljusterö and in the southeast Grönsö, because the land uplift had not yet created a cohesive island.

Already below the turning time (around 550 AD) there was a permanent population on Ljusterö. Traces of ancient tombs are still visible next to several of the villages on the island. The oldest finds are from the village Bolby on southern Ljusterö, where a large tomb from the Iron Age was excavated about 100 years ago, but which unfortunately turned out to be empty. Between the 14th and 19th centuries, many farms belonged to noble estates, and large sections of the population subsisted on fishing.

During the 20th century, the island became a popular summer place for Stockholmers, and former farms were bought up by construction companies, who cut up plots and sold them. In 1937 the island received electricity and in 1955 a free ferry.

Locals

Ljusterö has about 1,800 permanent residents. In the summer, the number is increased to over 30,000 people. There are about 150 companies on the island, of which just over 100 are members of the Ljusterö business association.

Climate

Language

On Ljusterö, a particular dialect was never spoken, but there were some features in common with other archipelago residents, and some word choices and inflections. His boat was generally pronounced as his boat. Today, a more common Swedish is spoken.
