Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (often abbreviated Llanfair PG or Llanfairpwll) it's a city British of the Wales.

With its 58 characters it is the longest toponym in Europe and the second longest in the world, after the hill of Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu in New Zeland. For convenience, the very long name is shortened to Llanfair PG or Llanfairpwll, enough to distinguish it from other Welsh places named Llanfair.

The name translated from Welsh means "Church of Santa Maria in the valley of the white hazel, near the rapids and the church of San Tisilio near the red cave". Because of this characteristic, the name of the town is a tourist attraction, as well as a statistical singularity: many people stop at the train station to have a photo taken next to the station sign or have their passport stamped in local shops. Another tourist attraction is the nearby column of the Marquis of Anglesey, from which you have an overview of the island of Anglesey and the Menai Strait.

The long toponym was born around 1860 at the behest of the city council, specifically for the privilege and prestige of having "the longest name of a railway station in Great Britain"; the original name of the place, in fact, was Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, which in itself was already quite articulate. The merger of the two terms generated the long toponym, which however is no longer considered as purely Welsh.

A reasonable attempt to pronounce the word in Italian could be lhan vair pulh guenn ghelh go gheriH uern drob ulh lhan te sili o go gogoH. The "H", as in the final syllable, represent a very aspirated "glottal h" sound similar to that used in German with the spelling ch in Bach. The double elle, here transcribed as lh, resembles an aspirated 'l', or even a drawl of "cl", and is pronounced while passing air around the tongue (try blowing while saying "l") .

The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with mild summers and cool, wet winters.

Background

Traces of permanent settlements date back to the Neolithic, they highlighted the presence of a primitive population devoted to subsistence agriculture and fishing.

Subsequently, the island of Anglesey it became a land of conquest of the Roman troops led by Gaius Suetonius Paolino.

In medieval times the area came under the control of the Kingdom of Gwynedd which, through its feudal system, saw the birth of a series of farms scattered throughout the territory.

The village of Llanfair was born around the middle of the sixteenth century and, together with the entire territory of the island, was included in the Brand of Anglesey.

During the nineteenth century the population of the country had a significant increase and in 1826 the island was connected to the rest of Wales by two bridges: the Menai Suspension Bridge designed by Thomas Telford and the Britannia Bridge; the latter allowed the railway connection with London and with the nearby port.

By car

The main road is the A55, also known as North Wales Expressway, which runs along the city. This is the main road from the Welsh mainland across the Britannia Bridge in one direction and from Holyhead in the other. A secondary route is the A5 from Bangor, which crosses the Menai Suspension Bridge to the city of Menai Bridge and from there to Llanfair PG.

It is best seen from afar, for example from the Menai suspension bridge. It is no longer possible to enter or climb the monument, due to its precarious and unsafe conditions.
