The name written on the local sign is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu and reports in English the tradition according to which Tamatea had to fight in that place against the Ngati Hine people and in the course of the battle her brother was killed. Tamatea was so saddened by the loss that she stayed a few days on the spot and every morning she went to that knoll to play the Kōauau in her memory.
