Lustenau is the most populous market town Of Austria and is located in the west of the state Vorarlberg.

Despite constant growth, the community has retained its village character and offers its visitors a local area interspersed with trees and green spaces, which is framed by the fields of the reed and the Rhine foreland.

background

Created by Emperor Charlemagne as a free imperial court, Lustenau enjoyed a special position within the Holy Roman Empire for a thousand years. It was not until 1830 that the place - the last in Vorarlberg - came to Austria. The historical demarcation from the surrounding communities can still be felt today - be it in their own unmistakable dialect, in local patriotism or in the banter with which the rest of Vorarlbergers like to treat the Lustenau residents. The community also expresses pride in its history in many names from the “Reichshofsaal” to the “Reichshofstadion”.

The untamed Rhine determined the fate of Lustenau until the end of the 19th century and kept the population in poverty through its destructive floods. The basis for growing prosperity was not laid until the Rhine regulation began in 1895, so it is not surprising that a museum is dedicated to this project. After the embroidery industry determined the economic activity in the area for decades, Lustenau today offers a wide range of industries a home, not least in the two industrial areas on the edge of the settlement area.
