Saon Monastery is a monastic settlement from Tulcea county, Dobrogea, Romania.

Historic

The monastery was founded under Ottoman rule in 1846, with the departure of some monks from the Celic-Dere Monastery. These monks built here a hermitage as a metoc of the Celic-Dere Monastery, composed of several adobe cells and a chapel.

In 1846, the old church dedicated to the "Ascension of the Lord" was built of wood, woven twigs and earth. From the same period, a body of cells is also preserved. An important event in the history of the monastic settlement took place during the time of the abbot Filimon (1889-1905) when the entire hermitage was affected by a fire, the old church of the monastery miraculously escaping.

In 1909 the hermitage came under the jurisdiction of the Cocoș Monastery, the year in which the works on the new church of the monastery began, which is dedicated to the "Cover of the Mother of God", whose construction lasted until after the First World War. In 1959 the hermitage was dismantled and in 1972 the monastic complex was reopened as the metoch of the Archdiocese of Tomis and the Lower Danube. Since 1990, Saon has become an independent monastery again. The monastery ensemble is on the list of historical monuments in Romania.
