Machachi is the capital of the canton of Mejía and is located in the province Pichincha in the Highlands of Ecuador.

The region was already densely populated in the Inca times.

The name Machachi is derived from Ma for great, Cha for earth / soil, and Chi for rich, wealthy.

The region initially belonged to Quito until 1869, in 1883 the canton Mejía was founded and Machachi the capital.

In addition to agriculture, the production of Drinking water from the volcanic rock, the brand name "Güitig" stands for high-quality mineral water from Ecuador worldwide and has a German origin: According to tradition, the local water was rated as "valid" by a German towards the end of the 19th century and the name was then adopted as "Güitig". Sales began in 1902, followed by the Tesalia Springs Company was founded and production and bottling began on a large scale. Today the water from Machachi is sold worldwide as a top product, the main sales area is the USA.

There is also a flower production (protected "under foil") in the vicinity of the city.
