Machachi is the capital of the canton of Mejía and is located in the province Pichincha in the Highlands of Ecuador.
background
The region was already densely populated in the Inca times.
The name Machachi is derived from Ma for great, Cha for earth / soil, and Chi for rich, wealthy.
The region initially belonged to Quito until 1869, in 1883 the canton Mejía was founded and Machachi the capital.
In addition to agriculture, the production of Drinking water from the volcanic rock, the brand name "Güitig" stands for high-quality mineral water from Ecuador worldwide and has a German origin: According to tradition, the local water was rated as "valid" by a German towards the end of the 19th century and the name was then adopted as "Güitig". Sales began in 1902, followed by the Tesalia Springs Company was founded and production and bottling began on a large scale. Today the water from Machachi is sold worldwide as a top product, the main sales area is the USA.
There is also a flower production (protected "under foil") in the vicinity of the city.

The nearest international airports are the in Quito (approx. 50 km) and the Guayaquil Airport (350 km).

Machachi station is a station on the Andean Railway Ferrocarril Transandino (Stammlinie, Südlinie), which since 2013 has been continuously operated by the tourist train Tren Crucero between the two end stations Guayaquil and Quito is driven on.

- Iglesia Santiago Apostol. Parish church, the first church was built in the late 17th century under the French monks, this church was destroyed in a violent earthquake on February 7, 1922, after which today's building was built. On the outside, the facade with its four towers is striking; on the inside, the paintwork with bold bright colors and the decor with modern paintings is striking.
- Parque Central. The central city park in front of the Casa Municipal with the Municipal Theater, but the theater is no longer in operation.
