The Royal Palace

Madrid (Spanish Madrid) - the largest city and capital Spain, located in the central part of the country, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, on the Manzanares River. It is located at an altitude of approx. 600 m above sea level. and is the highest capital city European after the capital of Andorra.

Madrid-Barajas International Airport (ICAO: LEMD, IATA: MAD) is the largest airport in Spain, one of the largest in Europe. It is situated 13 km northeast of the center of Madrid.

You can reach the center of Madrid from Barajas Airport by subway - at the airport there is a station of line 8 (€ 4), by bus; and taxi - cost approx. € 25.

By car

Traveling by car from Poland can take up to 24 hours, so travelers may consider spreading this route over at least two days. The shortest and most convenient way is through Germany and France. Outside Germany, motorways are tolled.

By train

Poland has no direct rail connections to Madrid.

By bus

Most international buses arrive and depart from Estación Sur de Autobuses (Calle de Mendez Alvaro, Tel: 34 91-468-4200 [5]). Buses to Barcelona and Bilbao depart from Avenida de America bus terminal (Ave. de America). There is an underground station in both terminals.

The most convenient mode of transport in Madrid. There are twelve metro lines. You can buy a single or ten-trip ticket. A one-day tourist card, which entitles you to unlimited travel, can be purchased at larger tourist information points for € 5. A useful map is attached to it. At the airport (terminals 2 and 3), such a point is located just before the entrance to the subway, on the left side. There are single and ten-journey tickets (metrobus).

The network of bus connections is very extensive. As in the case of the metro, there are single and ten-trip tickets (metrobus).

Car

The city has a clear street layout (except the old center, of course), the use of GPS is recommended. Numerous multi-storey car parks. The driving style of Madrid drivers is aggressive, you can count on someone to give way to us or let our car pass, while the Spanish driver will always give way at the pedestrian crossing, unlike the Polish one.

Worth seeing

Palacio Real

The Royal Palace, built in the 18th century by King Philip V of the Bourbon dynasty, is one of the most recognizable places in Madrid. This majestic neoclassical building has 2,800 rooms. Many of them are open to visitors. Inside, you can admire the richly decorated rooms and numerous collections of the palace collection, including portraits of the royal family by Goya. Additionally, you can visit the Royal Library and Armory.
Next to the Palace there is Campo Moro - a beautifully decorated park and garden.

Museums

There are many museums in Madrid with an extremely rich collection of works of art. Among them, three deserve special attention.

  • Museo del Prado is one of the most famous in the world. It houses collections of masterpieces by the greatest Spanish painters, such as: El Greco, Velasqez and Goya, as well as paintings by Zurben, Ribalt, Murilla and others. There you can also admire the works of great Italian masters, including Titian. It is not possible to visit the museum, even superficially, in one day. During the tourist season, there is a long queue to enter.
  • Centro de Arte Reina Sofia it is a 20th century art museum. It houses works by Dali, Mir and Picasso, including his most famous painting - Guernice.
  • Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza it contains a private collection of approx. 800 works of art from different eras.
