Madrid (autonomous community) - one of the seventeen autonomous regions Spain. It covers an area of 8028 km² and its population is about 6.5 million. Its capital is Madrid. Other major cities are Alcalá de Henares, Móstoles, San Lorenzo de El Escorial and Aranjuez.
Madrid is the third most populous autonomous community in Spain and the most densely populated. Its center is the country's capital, with over six million people living in the region as a whole, half of them in Madrid alone. There are also other cities within the community around the Madrid metropolis, two of which have more than two hundred thousand inhabitants. Madrid has been the country's capital since 1561, where it was moved from Toledo by King Philip II.
