Drive

By plane

The international Chopin Airport is located in Warsaw. It has a direct connection with dozens of cities in Europe and around the world. Some low-cost airlines fly to the Warsaw Modlin airport, located approx. 40 km northwest of downtown Warsaw.

By rail

In the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, Warsaw can be reached by rail by Koleje Mazowieckie (www.mazowieckie.com.pl). However, throughout Poland, you can get to the capital by Inter City trains or regional services. On the other hand, EuroCity trains can take you to Warsaw from the capitals of European Union countries.

By car

You can get to Warsaw via the A2 motorway (e.g. from Poznań or Łódź). In addition, the capital can be reached by national roads: DK2 (from Mińsk Mazowiecki and Siedlce), DK8 (from Białystok, Suwałki and Wrocław), DK61 (from Ostrołęka and Augustów), DK92 (from Łódź and Ziemniaków), DK7 (from Gdańsk and Krakow), DK79 (z Sandomierz) is 198 km[1] and DK17 (from Lublin and Zamość). In addition, you can also get to the provincial roads: 801, 637, 638, 631 and 724). The city is surrounded (partially) by the ring road: Southern Warsaw Bypass (S2, section: Konotopa - Puławska), Western Bypass of Warsaw (S8, within Warsaw as Obrońców Grodna) and the Northern Bypass of Warsaw (DK7, DK8 on the Powązki - Modlińska section: al. Armii Krajowej with the Grota-Roweckiego Bridge; S8 on the section Modlińska - Piłsudskiego: Toruńska Street). Travel time by car in selected cities to the center of Warsaw:

  • from Lublin: 2 hours 13 min (168 km)
  • from Łódź: 1 hour 22 min (130 km)
  • from Krakow: 3 hours 32 min (292 km)
  • from Wrocław: 3 hours 40 min (366 km)
  • from Potatoes: 2 hours 38 min (310 km)
  • from Gdańsk: 3 hours 21 min (417 km)
  • from Szczecin: 4 hours 36 min (566 km)
  • from Moscow: 14 hours 49 min (1293 km)
  • from Berlin: 5 hours 9 min (569 km)
  • from Athens: 22 hours 29 min (2346 km)
  • from Paris: 13 hours 50 min (1582 km)
  • from London: 14 hours 55 min (1626 km)
  • from Rome: 17 hours 5 min (1805 km)

By bus

The largest bus station in Warsaw, where domestic and international lines run, is "Dworzec Zachodni". PolskiBUS.com has its own transfer HUBs located at "Metro Wilanowska" and "Metro Młociny" stations. Long-distance services from major domestic and international carriers come to Warsaw, including: PolskiBUS.com, Lux Express, Simple Express, ECOLINES, Żak Express, NEOBUS.

Public collective transport

Warsaw is surrounded by a dense network of over two hundred public transport lines, managed by the ZTM. On the ZTM website there is comprehensive information on the tariff (reduced 50% discount)

  • 20-minute ticket: PLN 3.40 (1st and 2nd zone)
  • 75-minute ticket: PLN 4.40 (1st zone)
  • 90-minute ticket: PLN 7.00 (1st and 2nd zone)
  • daily ticket: PLN 15.00 (1st zone), PLN 26.00 (1st and 2nd zone)
  • weekend ticket: PLN 24.00 (1st and 2nd zone)
  • group weekend ticket: PLN 40.00 (zone 1 and 2, no discount)
  • personal tickets:
  1. 30-day: PLN 110 (zone 1), PLN 210 (zone 1 and 2)
  2. 90-day: PLN 280 (zone 1), PLN 536 (zone 1 and 2)

The 75-minute and 90-minute tickets are officially called "single transfer tickets" also in the ticket machines, while the 20-minute tickets are called "time tickets". This distinction may be confusing, due to the fact that in practice "single transfer" tickets are also temporary, i.e. valid for a certain time from validation, while "temporary" tickets are also transferable, i.e. it is possible to travel with an unlimited number of means of transport in time. 20 minutes from cancellation.

Trams

Tram network map (animated line map)

The network of tram lines, due to the existence of only two metro lines, plays an important role in the central districts of Warsaw. In view of the continuous modernization of subsequent sections of the network, the line routes are frequently changed (e.g. every 2 weeks), therefore it is necessary to visit the ZTM websites (in the "maps and diagrams" section, the map of public transport is updated on an ongoing basis) or to read messages at stops. There is sufficient information about the detours, and if one gets lost in it, it is because of inattention. In the event of changes to key lines, there are also people at the stops providing detailed information. The network of tram lines is regularly expanded.

Coaches

The dominant means of transport is the bus. In addition to local functions, it also plays an important role in supplying large estates (Bródno-Podgrodzie, Tarchomin, Ursus). Suburban lines start from important communication junctions, such as Okęcie (tram terminus) or Metro Wilanowska (the so-called "South Railway Station"). Night buses depart from the Central Station (except for circular lines and some suburban lines) 15 and 45 minutes after each full hour. On days when large mass events take place, the night buses are so crowded that they hardly take any passengers after leaving the loop!

subway

The first metro line (M1) is north-south and runs until 1.00 am, on Fridays and Saturdays the service is extended until 3 am. The completed central section of the second metro line (M2) runs along the east-west line between Rondo Daszyńskiego and Trocka. The lines cross at the Świętokrzyska station, where they are connected by an underground link. The metro runs very often, every 3 minutes during rush hours, every 4-6 minutes off rush hours, only every 10-15 minutes late in the evening.

Masovian Railways

The regional carrier operating suburban trains accepts ZTM tickets in Warsaw (and on the Warszawa Wileńska-Ząbki section) - daily, weekend, group weekend, 30- and 90-day tickets. It is not a competitive mode of transport due to low speeds and sparse journeys (especially at weekends).

Suburban train

A network of railways connecting localities near Warsaw with the center of the capital. There are currently four lines:

  • S1 Otwock - Pruszków
  • S2 Warsaw Chopin Airport - Sulejówek Miłosna
  • S3 Warsaw Chopin Airport - Wieliszew (via Warsaw Central)
  • S9 Warszawa Zachodnia (platform 8) - Legionowo Piaski

Warsaw Commuter Railway

A suburban railway connecting Warsaw ("Śródmieście WKD" station, near the Central Railway Station) with suburban towns, located west of Warsaw (last stop - Grodzisk Mazowiecki). ZTM tickets are honored in the same way as in Koleje Mazowieckie - on the section Warszawa Śródmieście WKD - Opacz.

Bicycles

The bicycle infrastructure in Warsaw is well developed. One of the most useful bicycle routes was created during the construction of the second metro line - it can be traveled in safe conditions from the West Station to the East Railway Station, as well as numerous branches on the way. An interesting fact is the light signals activated by the photocell. In Warsaw, you can use the "Veturilo" self-service bike rentals - operated by the "NextBike" system.

Shopping

Shopping centers are located mainly on the outskirts, but also in central districts - the most centrally located are "Złote Tarasy" - next to the Central Railway Station. At Rondo Zgrupowania AK “Radosław” (commonly known as Rondo Babka or Rondo Radosława) there is “Arkadia”, and at Dworzec Wileński - “Galeria Wileńska”. In the very center there is also "Galeria Centrum" (formerly "Domy Towarowe Centrum") with numerous clothing stores ("Centrum / Metro Centrum" stop). At the "Centrum" metro station, as in many nearby underground passages, there is also a small shopping arcade with numerous bookstores, clothing stores, etc. Chmielna is a famous shopping street, stretching between Galeria Centrum and Nowy Świat. Nowy Świat itself is rather a cafeteria basin, although shops can also be found there.

Gastronomy

Sparingly

Fast - all over Warsaw you can find many eateries offering "something warm". A popular snack is the kebab (PLN 7-10), in the basement you can often buy heated sandwiches. For fans of more "global" flavors, there are network classics - McDonald's, Burger King, KFC and Pizza Hut, richly scattered throughout the city. There are still many milk bars in Warsaw, which are only milk in name, and you can buy a wholesome, tasty dinner there for little money, because the bars are subsidized with the city's money. The list is e.g. here or hereAt the bus station Warszawa Zachodnia, next to the waiting room, there is a restaurant offering "home cooking" for PLN 10-15 for 2 courses.

For the very hungry - if we want to eat a really solid portion, and at the same time not taste too much, numerous small bar-restaurants come to our aid. There is a particularly positive price-quality-quantity ratio in oriental establishments, such as "Dudu" (Królewska / Marszałkowska) or "Que Huong" (Zbawiciela Square, two-level premises). Dinner sets can be bought there for PLN 12.

Unusually - in the evening and night hours, at the former Warszawa Główna train station, the "Barobus" is open, serving recommendable bar meals. The place is very popular. During the summer holidays "Barobus" moves to the seaside.

It's sweet - in the evening and at night, on the edge of the Świętokrzyski Park (from the "Metro Świętokrzyska" station), tasty cake wafers with cocoa filling of their own production are sold.
