Malans is a place in the so-called Bündner Herrschaft in the Swiss canton Grisons.

background

The wine-growing village of Malans is located on a cone of rubble southeast of the Vilan at the gate to the Prättigau and on the historic transit routes that cross the Alps. Thanks to the gentle south-westerly slope and the protection from the cold east winds by the cliffs of Falknis, Glegghorn and Vilan and therefore somewhat exposed to the warm downward winds of the foehn, the climate in the place is extremely mild, so that wine has been grown here for centuries. The slightly elevated position gave protection from ruffles and floods by the Rhine.

The place on the Rhine long ago in Roman times on the transit routes over the Julier Pass to the south. The place was first mentioned in a document in 966 when Emperor Otto I was the bishop of Chur a winery in Mals. In the Middle Ages, the Lords of Wynegg, who on the 1 Wynegg Castle resided, the power on which 2 Klingenhorn Castle the Lords of Matsch, later ownership went to the County of Toggenburg.

The reigns were held at Brandis Castle in Maienfeld. Since the House of Brandis sided with the Austrians in the Swabian Wars, after the Austrian defeat there was severe destruction and arson in Maienfeld. When negotiations with Emperor Maximilian about the acquisition began in 1504, the inhabitants of the valley feared for their independence. In 1509 the three leagues (from which Graubünden arose) were able to acquire the rule of the Brandis family for 20,000 guilders. The Bündner Herrschaft as a subject country was allowed to appoint its bailiff itself every two years; the rule of Chur did not end until it joined the Confederation of the Canton of Graubünden in 1803.

At the traffic connection to Chur and ins Prättigau the only weekly market in the area of the ten-court association developed in Malans. Only with the construction of the bypass road after Chur 1859 on the SBB railway line St. Gallen - Chur the village was largely bypassed and lost in importance, in 1864 the market was held for the last time. The patrician houses indicate that not only important merchant families lived here, the Graubünden aristocratic families also earned money from mercenaries for centuries.
