To go
By plane
The companies serving Kindu in domestic service for other big cities of the DRC are:
- African Aviation Company (CAA)
- Congolese airlines (LAKE)
Some airlines cancel a flight at the last minute because there are not enough passengers to make a profit and pay for fuel etc. and delays are frequent and schedules are not respected. The trip since Kinshasa itself only takes a few hours but you can expect a day late!
By train
The only train line connects Kindu to Lubumbashi in the province of Katanga. The line was rehabilitated at the end of the 2000s, although the rolling stock comes in second hand fromEurope and D'India. The train stops at a number of towns along the line sometimes over a day, making the journey from Lubumbashi to Kindu is a 4 to 8 day ordeal. Don't expect sleeping compartments, a dining car, or even comfortable seating. You will most likely have a seat in an aging passenger car at best or have to stand or sit in an empty freight car at worst. Train schedules are irregular, and there can sometimes be 2 to 3 weeks between departures. Contact the station master at a station to inquire about the next train, but expect delays. Pay only on the day of departure and bring plenty of food and bottled water for the route.
By car
The roads in Maniema are all unpaved and generally in poor condition.
