manokwari is the capital of the Indonesian province West Papua, in Irian Jaya. The city has 130,000 inhabitants.

Manokwari is the city where the Dutch Mission first set foot in Irian and according to the Papuans the "Word" was brought into the country here. Messrs Ottow and Geissler, two German representatives of a Dutch missionary society, had this honour. Throughout the province you can find monuments that refer to this.
The city also houses the agricultural faculty of the Universitas Cenderawasih (Bird of Paradise University) and that makes Manokwari a student city.
Manokwari is also the city to use as a base to explore other places in eastern bird's head reach.

Manokwari has a small airport where mostly small and medium-sized aircraft can land. It is best reached from Biak.
The port is also served by the passenger ships of PT PELNI from sorong, serui and Nabire.

There are a number of nice beaches around the city. Opposite the city is the island of Mansinam where the very first missionaries set foot ashore. In the hinterland lies the Arfak Mountains, a fairly inaccessible region. Ransiki. Even further south you will find the place Wasior the one on the Wandamen Bay is.
From the airport, small propeller planes of the Twinotter type go to other places in the district. There are 17 places where they can land and 3 are chosen per day. Often one decides in the air where to go depending on the weather conditions, because some runways are unpaved. If you decide to go somewhere with such a plane, be aware that it can take up to 3 weeks before they come to pick you up again and in the meantime you have nowhere to go.
