Sorong is a city in the Vogelkopf region Western New Guinea. It has little to offer in terms of tourism; it is more of interest as a transit and supply point.

background

A small settlement founded in 1908 grew into a town that also attracted Chinese traders after 1932, when Shell set up an oil production facility here. Until 1957, when almost 8,000 people lived here, the place was the administrative seat of Dutch New Guinea. Like most cities in West Papua, Sorong is now dominated by Indonesian transmigrants. The city has been growing rapidly since 2010. By 2014 the population grew by ten percent. The construction of a modern container port was completed in 2013.
