Mansfeld is a city in Saxony-Anhalt.

background

Mining since the Middle Ages ("Mansfeld copper slate") led to an early boom in the city, which was also the residence of the County of Mansfeld, an independent territory in the Holy Roman Empire until the 16th century. The mining industry attracted numerous immigrants, including the later iron and steel entrepreneur Hans Luder, whose son Martin, now with a hard work d, contrary to his father's wishes, did not join his parents' company, but preferred to change the world from Wittenberg. Mansfeld therefore has the semi-official suffix Lutherstadt given, in contrast to Wittenberg and Eisleben but with the Lutherstadt after the city name.

The town of Mansfeld today includes the incorporated districts of Abberode, Abberode, Biesenrode, Braunschwende, Friesdorf, Gorenzen, Grossörner, Hermerode, Leimbach, Möllensdorf, Molmerswende, Piskaborn, Ritzgerode, Siebigerode and Vatterode. Together they come to around 10,000 inhabitants.

getting there

By plane

By train

The closest train station is in the suburb of Klostermansfeld, around 5 km to the east. Regional express trains from the long-distance stops Erfurt - (Sangerhausen) - Magdeburg stop there every two hours. The Wippertalbahn leading through Mansfeld, the Wipperliese, only has seasonal tourist traffic.

By bus

Bus line 420 of the state network Saxony-Anhalt (Eisleben-Hettstedt) drives to Mansfeld at least every two hours and has connections to regional trains Halle-Nordhausen (-Kassel) in Eisleben.

The next long-distance bus stop is, albeit rarely served Aschersleben. There is more choice of connections in Halle and Magdeburg.

In the street

Mansfeld is accessed by the north-south federal highway B 180 and the westward B 242 ("Harzhochstrasse"). The next motorway exit is the Eisleben exit on the A 38 Halle-Göttingen, about 25 km south on the B 180.

On foot

Mansfeld is a station of the Luther way.
