Marree is a city in the north South Australia. The settlement was originally named Hergott Springs after the German botanist Joseph Albert Herrgott. In 1883 the current name was introduced parallel to the naturalized one and in 1918 the settlement was renamed because of the resentment towards German-born Australians.

Of Port Augusta Coming from Spencer Golf, Marree is 368 km on the B83 via Hawker and Leigh Creek. From Lyndhurst, the last 78 km are on a well-maintained gravel road.
From the north the Birdsville Track leads from Birdsville, Queensland over 520 km to Marree and from the northwest you can reach Marree via the Oodnadatta Track of Coober Pedy (370 km) or Oodnadatta (306 km).
